Concerts with Ensemble Reza

It is always great to play with Janet Hilton and Pavlos Carvalho. Yesterday saw a repeat performance of a programme we did last year including works by Beethoven, Ginastera, Nino Rota, Berg and Brahms. There was a good turnout in St Peter’s Church in Petersfield with the audience being very welcoming.

As always Hannah Carter, who manages the ensemble did a brilliant job organising this event! Ensemble Reza offers regular concerts for its core members, but sometimes invites guest artist such as Janet and myself. My next appearance with this organisation will be on February 28th in a duo recital with Pavlos Carvalho in Haywards Heath featuring works by Rachmaninoff and Franck. Merry Christmas

After a very busy autumn with performances in London, Leeds, Cottbus and other lovely places it is now time to enjoy a nice Christmas break!

Many exciting projects are lined up for the new year and contemporary music is at the heart of my musical activities in early 2015: February will see the premiere of a new piano piece by Deborah Pritchard and in March Alfia Nakipbekova, Karin de Fleyt and myself will launch Trio Sonore performing works by Kaija Saariaho, Marc Yeats and Damien Harron at the International Festival for Innovations in Music Production and Composition in Leeds.

Furthermore I look forward to playing chamber recitals with violinist Sebastian Müller as well as with clarinettist Janet Hilton and cellist Pavlos Carvalho. Other highlights include a lecture recital on piano works by Adolf Busch at the London International Piano Symposium at the Royal College of Music in London in February and a concert tour in the state of Brandenburg/Germany in April.

I feel deeply honoured to have been asked to  join the staff at the University of York, where I will start teaching in January in addition to my existing positions at Leeds College of Music and at Goldsmiths University. I also look forward to giving a master class at Birmingham Conservatoire in January.

More about all these events nearer the time, but for today a wonderful festive season and a creative and very happy New Year 2015!

Scriabin and other Russians…

Another exciting project will be the performance of Scriabin’s Piano Concerto in F sharp minor op.20 on December 1st 2014 at 8 pm at Holy Trinity in Leeds. This concert will be part of a short Festival promoted by Arts@Trinity and Leeds College of Music celebrating great Russian Music. I look forward to collaborating with the conductor James Ham and the Elmet Sinfonietta on this occasion and to  performing this beautiful master piece. Other works on the programme will be The Night on the bare Mountain by Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky’s wonderful 4th Symphony. For tickets please contact LCoM box office. It would be great to see you there…

More Piano Duet…

In collaboration with pianist and fellow lecturer at Leeds College of Music, Nico de Villiers I am going to play two concerts promoted by the Lewisham Choral Society. On November 15th we will be playing the piano parts in the performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle alongside Variations on a theme by Paganini for 2 pianos by Lutoslawski. The concert will commence at 7.30 pm and will be held at Goldsmiths College, Great Hall. For event details please click on the following link: event November 15th.

The second of these concerts will take place on July 4th 2015 where we will be performing Bartok’s Sonata for two pianos and percussion and the 2 piano version of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Details to follow nearer the time.

Educational Work

I look forward to giving recitals and workshops in two of England’s most prestigious independent schools.

On October 30th I will join Simon Desbrulais and Deborah Pritchard for a recital at Eton College. The programme will feature Pritchard’s “Seven Halts on the Somme” for trumpet and piano as well as works by Bruch and Ligeti.

The other event will take place on November 3rd: Together with my friend and colleague Eleanor Hodgkinson I will be giving a workshop on piano duo and piano duet repertoire at Warwick School. On the same day we will also be giving a lunch time recital including works by Schubert, Rachmaninoff and Dvorak.

Contemporary Music

Recently I have embarked on two exciting projects focussing on contemporary music.

This autumn and early 2015 I will be performing in several trumpet and piano recitals and composers’ workshops together with Simon Desbruslais   and Deborah Pritchard. These will take place in London, Eton College and Leeds College of Music with the next event being held on Sunday, October 19th at 5 pm at Royal Academy of Music, Josefowitz Hall launching Simon’s CD of New British Trumpet Concertos.

With keen anticipation I also look forward to a new collaborati0n with the flautist Karin de Fleyt and the cellist Alfia Nakipbekova, both wonderful colleagues at Leeds College of Music and distinguished musicians. We are currently focussing on repertoire by George Crumb and Kaija Saariaho with the launch of the trio to take place in spring 2015.
