Contemporary Music

Jakob has a keen interest in contemporary music. In November 2007 he initiated a highly acclaimed concert at the Warehouse, London, which was promoted by Sounds Underground. It featured three newly commissioned works. Elena Langer: 2 songs on poems by Daniil Kharms for soprano, cello and piano, Henry Ng: “In an artists’ studio” for soprano, cello and piano and Bernard Hughes: “Strettos and Striations” for solo piano. Pieces by more established 20th century composers such as Morton Feldman and Hugh Wood were performed alongside these new works.

This concert led to Jakob’s further involvement in Sounds Underground as an assistant artistic director enabling him to realize own projects and ideas and influence the artistic direction of the organization as a whole. As part of the Sounds Underground concert series he has embarked on a new exciting collaboration with the actor Tom Frankland and the composer Robert Fokkens. Texts from two authors, Oscar Wilde and Arthur Schnitzler, are the starting point for Fokkens’ newly commissioned work, which will be performed in spring 2009.
